Lights & Nights On The Cuyahoga

By: Creative Fuel

Recently a group of NELSON Worldwide’s teammates in Cleveland previewed an outdoor art installation by a group called Squidsoup located on the streetcar level of the Detroit-Superior Bride. The bridge is a 3,112-foot long arch bridge that stretches over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1955, and the streetcar level was added, but years later it was closed. Since then, the bridge has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and Kent State University’s CUDC (Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative) has adopted the area making it a destination for the Creative Fusion program to host events and other activities.

This year is a special year for the bridge and river as 2019 marks 50 years since the Cuyahoga River fire. The Squidsoup installation is just one of the many events that have been held in the rivers honor and when we heard about the light exhibit we knew it was the perfect opportunity to take a break from work and spend time together as a team.

Squidsoup is a UK-based international group of artists, researchers, technologists, and designers working with digital and interactive media experiences. Their work combines physical and dynamic digital spaces with light to produce immersive exhibit experiences. This particular exhibit called, Ascendance and Cuyahoga Flow consist of glowing lights strung on cables swaying and changing color to music. Dancers from Water Worship, a Cleveland ensemble, also performed during the show. It’s nice to see historical parts of the city revived for something new and unique, and what better way to celebrate 50 years of a river than hovering over it with beautiful lights and good music.

So, the next time you need a break from work and someone asks you to go to a weird art show—just go!
